CranioSacral Therapy & SER
What Is CranioSacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on, effective Osteopathic Medicine treatment method designed to enhance the functioning of the cranio-sacral system comprised of the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord. This method was taught by Dr. John Upledger, DO to non-osteopaths since he felt that it was so effective that it must belongs to humanity at large.
The cranio-sacral system impacts the health of the central nervous system. Naturally, imbalances in this system could cause any number of sensory, motor or neurological problems, that might include, but are not limited to chronic pain, inexplicable migraines and headaches, a sense of being generally tired and unwell, problems with motor-coordination, vision and learning disabilities.
CranioSacral Therapy allows the release of blockages, tension, and emotional/physical trauma stored in the mind-body. Without pain or discomfort, the gentle physical adjustments facilitate the letting go of patterns which restrict vitality, enhancing the body’s natural capacity for self-repair.
CranioSacral Therapy is often deeply moving, profoundly refreshing and exhilarating. The results can be life-changing.
How Does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

During a session the patient is tipically fully clothed. The therapist's hands gently touch client's head or spine monitoring the natural rhythm of the craniosacral system of membranes and fluids in order to detect subtle restrictions and imbalances. Naturally, these membranes and fluids cannot be directly reached but have direct attachments to the bones of the head (cranium) and the inside of the
tailbone (sacrum). The therapist uses these bones to monitor the imbalances and blockages and affect the membranes and fluids of the cranio-sacral system itself.

Sessions last anywhere from about 15 minutes to over an hour. The outcome is a deep sense of relaxation and balance. As membrane restrictions are released and the body returns to optimal functioning, memories of trauma, injury and other significant life-events that are often stored in the connective tissues can be released along with the emotions related to the cause of the restriction. When such releases take place, the therapist and client work together to allow expression of these memories and feelings, thereby reducing or eliminating the dysfunction in the body areas involved.

CranioSacral Therapy is a min-body therapy that can dramatically increase wellness and vitality, as well as address physical aches and pains, acute and chronic disease, and emotional or psychological disturbances. Sometimes the benefits are not immediately noticeable but progress becomes obvious over time. Since CranioSacral Therapy aids the body’s innate healing process the therapist is merely a facilitator of self-healing that sometimes can continue weeks after the treatment.
What Is Somato-Emotional Release?
Somato-Emotional Release (SER) takes place during CranioSacral Therapy for releasing emotional energy stored in different areas the body's connective tissues. Emotions that could not be expressed or released at the time of the event or they may be withheld - particularly strong emotions associated with trauma - and, thus, become trapped in tissues of the body. SER discovers and releases such stored emotional energy.
During these releases the body moves spontaneously and involuntarily. Therapists gentle touch provides the necessary physical support offers the necessary support for the body movement releases. As the movements eventually subside into stillness and are being held there, releases of emotions occur throughout the body in the form of crying, wailing, expressions of fear, anger or frustration.

The idea of tissue memory - the understanding that emotions and memories are store distributed throughout the body, not only in the brain is the basis of Somato-Emotional Release work. Whether supporting a limb or touching other areas of the body where energy restrictions and imbalances are present, the therapist’s touch and the ongoing therapeutic dialogue facilitates the release. The process begins because the requisite trust is present within the therapist-patient "team", which offers an avenue to the body to release the restriction or imbalance.

Dr. John Upledger, DO, has observed that "organs, tissues and individual cells possess memory, emotional capacity and intellect." The release of the retained emotion and pain returns the functioning of that organ or tisue to the optimal possible level. Awareness of the content being released passes through the patient's conscious awareness either at the time of the somato-emotional release experience or withing 24 to 48 hours of the session.

The somato-emotional release experience happens when the body is ready and cannot be forced. Any psychological/psychiatric issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, PTSD, mood swings, nervousness, etc, as well as any number of physical complaints due to stored emotions and pain can heal faster or disappear when the underlying emotional/spiritual restrictions and imbalances are being released from the body memory.
